Our last activity was to have a mock trial in our classroom. In this court case, the jury had to decide whether Rudra (a 25-year old investment consultant) was guilty of dangerous driving, for an incident in which he knocked 15-year old Oisín off his bike, seriously injuring him.
The lawyers for the prosecution and the defence put a lot of work into their opening and closing speeches, as well as into the types of questions they would ask. There were several witnesses in the case, who were also called upon to give testimony.
We had two court reporters, who tried to get interviews with the injured party and the accused, while we awaited the jury's verdict. And Rory acted as the judge on the day - his official courthouse regalia really lent an air of authority to the room when he walked in. "All rise!"
Ultimately, Rudra was found guilty of dangerous driving and sentenced to a two-year driving ban.
The mock trial was a different format in which we could practice our persuasive speech. It was a very educational and entertaining experience.
Thanks,
