In February, we were learning about the strand of Print in Art. We made our own printing stamps and then used them to make prints inspired by World War II, which we were learning about in History.

Later this year, 6th Class will be going on an overnight school tour to a camp site on the grounds of Russborough House in Blessington. There, we will take part in outdoor pursuits like kayaking.
We are very excited for the trip. As has become school tradition, we will be fundraising to contribute towards the cost of this trip. In the past month, we have been designing and producing bookmarks to sell to other children in the school. This week, we will work designing advertising and promotions for these useful items! Hopefully, next week we can begin marketing them within the school community. Watch this space! In October, we learned about Ancient China and visited the Chester Beatty Library to see their East Asian collection. We enjoyed our trip to the city centre and really enjoyed the trail we completed in the library. We had so much fun doing the trail, there was no time to take pictures! Our art this month was inspired by Chinese ink scrolls. To make them look more authentic, we cut doweling to hang them on.
This month in Sixth Class History, we've been learning about Ancient Rome. We're working in groups on Google Classroom to research some of the main areas of interest in Roman culture. We've done some reading as well. And in art, we've been inspired by Roman pottery and sculpture. We worked hard to use good techniques with our clay, to give our finished pieces the best chance of staying in one piece! Did you know that the busts that have survived from the Roman Empire do not actually look as they did at the time? They would originally have been painted, but that detail has been lost to the sands of time!
We've had a busy couple of months! In art, we did a paper mache project. We tried two different paper mache techniques and created some fearsome monsters and some hot air balloons to decorate our reading area. In science we have been doing different investigations. In one investigation, we tested different materials to find out which was the most waterproof. In another, we found that if you mix some materials together they can change. We made some wonderfully gooey slime by mixing contact lense solution, food colouring and bread soda together. Last month, we celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge. During the week, we practised lots of Gaeilge phrases and we also had a Lá Glas which included a parade and dancing. It was great fun! In March, we started our swimming lessons as part of our PE learning and we are really enjoying them! Every Friday we get the bus to the swimming pool and spend 45 minutes practising our swimming. We are really enjoying it and are improving every week. Here is a picture us waiting in the sun to get the bus.
We have had such a busy January and February! In art, we studied the work of two famous artists, Kandinsky and Van Gogh, and we have recreated our own versions of their paintings: Concentric circles and Starry Night. We also experimented with oil and chalk pastels to create wonderful solar systems and pictures of planet earth to link in with our geography and science work. We have been doing great Irish and English writing and we love reading our work to our partners when we've finished. They give us great compliments and tips. We've had so many events this spring. The Sam Maguire cup came to visit our school for a second time and this time we got to hold it! It was so heavy! On pancake day, we got to eat some delicious pancakes and during friendship week we wrote lovely things about each other on posters to take home. In maths, we have been learning about measurement and have had great fun estimating and measuring the lengths and widths of things in our school and at home. We've also been learning about shape and space. In pairs, we had a drawing challenge where one of us had to describe a picture to our partner (using words like beside, underneath, on top of and lots more) so they could draw it. It was a bit tricky but lots of fun! In science, we've been learning about different types of materials. This week we tested six objects to see which one was the most absorbent. What a fun couple of months!
In maths we have been learning about 2D shape in many different ways. We drew the shapes during art and created shape monster made from 2D shapes. During our maths lessons, we made the shapes on geo-boards and peg boards. In PE we made the shapes in groups. Take a look at our work! During our history lessons, we learned about the festival of Halloween. During art, we used our knowledge to create some decorations for the classroom. We have had a very busy October! In maths, we have been doing lots of team work to help us learn our numbers 10-20. We have all been improving our reading and have been practicing with our "buddy readers" in the classroom. Also, we have been learning all about Autumn and made some fantastic art using Autumn leaves. We researched facts about the hedgehog and wrote some poems to describe them. In history, we learned about homes in the past and built models of traditional Irish cottages. We really enjoyed the One Day Together Food Fair and enjoyed tasting lots of different types of delicious food. Finally, we have been playing very nicely with our friends and classmates both on the yard and during Friday Golden Time! What a great month! Have a look at our photo gallery to see some of our great learning. |
